National Register of Historic Places Nominations

The National Register identifies, evaluates, and documents historically significant buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts for awareness, posterity, and planning purposes. Listing on the NRHP also opens opportunities for federal preservation incentives, such as grant funding and historic tax credits.

The National Register is not regulatory. Protection of historic resources occurs at the local level, where regulations can be determined by the local citizens who have the strongest ties to and knowledge of their resources. Local preservation tools include:

  • Local Historic Zoning Overlays/Districts
  • Design Guidelines
  • Architectural Resource Surveys/Inventory
  • Certified Local Government program
